What Information Does a Christmas Sweater Manufacturer Need for a Quote?

RFQ brief for custom Christmas sweaters — design, sizes, colors, yarn

A Christmas sweater manufacturer needs nine pieces of information to give you an accurate quote: design, garment type, sizes, quantity, colors, yarn, destination, deadline, and label/packaging. Send these in your first brief and you'll get a real number in 1–2 days instead of a round of back-and-forth questions.

This guide explains each item, why it matters, and includes a ready-to-fill template you can copy straight into an email.

The nine items, explained

1. Design / artwork

Your motif is what we quote against — the more specific, the better.

  • Have artwork? Send a vector (AI, PDF, EPS) if possible; a clear JPG or sketch is enough to start.
  • No artwork yet? Describe it: "reindeer in a snowfield, all-over Fair Isle, 3 colors" is enough for a ballpark.
  • Note the pattern area — all-over, front-only, or a single motif. This is the biggest driver of charting cost.

2. Garment type

Crew-neck, cardigan, pullover, kids, hoodie? The silhouette changes the knitting and the price.

3. Sizes and size chart

Tell us your size range (S–2XL, kids 4–12, etc.) and your target market (US, UK, EU). We'll build the size chart to that market's standard — not a generic fit. Knitwear stretches, so we'll also confirm the tolerance (typically ±2 cm on key points) in the spec.

4. Quantity per design

How many pieces, and how you'll split them across sizes and colors. This is the biggest lever on unit price — the more pieces, the lower the cost (see our cost guide →). Also confirm whether the MOQ (typically 100 pieces per design) is met per design, per color, or per order.

5. Colors

  • Your brand Pantone(s) — we'll match them in yarn.
  • How many colors in the pattern — more colors = more charting and more yarn changes.
  • Background color — specify it separately from the pattern colors.

6. Yarn preference

Acrylic, cotton, acrylic-cotton blend, wool, merino — or tell us your target retail price and we'll recommend a fiber that hits it. If you don't have a preference, say so; standard stocked yarns are the fastest and most economical.

7. Destination

Your country/region affects freight and duties, and whether the quote should be FOB (you handle shipping) or DDP (delivered to your door, duties paid). Give us the delivery address if you want a landed-cost number.

8. Deadline / ship date

When do you need it on the shelf? This tells us whether your timeline is comfortable (order by early September for December delivery), needs express, or is at risk — and we'll tell you honestly.

9. Labels and packaging

Woven labels, hang tags, care labels, custom packaging — these add a small per-piece cost and are what make the sweater look branded. Include your requirements or logo artwork.

What happens after you send it

A factory-direct manufacturer should reply with:

  • A quote within 1–2 days — unit price, MOQ basis, and what's included
  • Digital proofs / tech packs free before you pay anything
  • A sampling timeline — for us, a physical knit sample in 48 hours, sample fee credited to bulk

If you only have a rough idea, send that. A partial brief gets you a ballpark, and we'll ask the two or three questions that matter before quoting precisely.

FAQ

Can I get a quote without artwork? Yes. Describe the garment, motif, and pattern area — that's enough for a ballpark. The precise quote comes once the design is finalized.

Do I need to know the yarn? No. If you don't have a preference, tell us your target retail price and we'll recommend a fiber that hits it.

What does "per design" MOQ mean? It means the minimum (typically 100 pieces) applies to each design, split across sizes and a few colorways — not 100 pieces per color. Confirm this with any supplier before designing.

Why do you need my destination? Freight and duties change the total cost. With your destination we can quote DDP so you see your true landed cost, not just the factory price.

Is sampling free? Usually there's a sample fee, but most factory-direct manufacturers (including us) credit it against your bulk order. Digital proofs are free.
